Ruiz Provides Walk-Off Heroics to Kick Off Senior Day as Toros Split to Close Weekend

CARSON -- Playing in the final two games of four years' worth of contests on Toro Diamond, senior Jasmine Ruiz made her opening statement a memorable one by clubbing a home run to tie the score in the bottom of the seventh, and another one in the bottom of the 10th to cap a come-from-behind walk-off rally that saw the Toros take a 3-2 win to kick off today's twinbill on the final day of the regular season.

The Otters, however, secured a 10-3 win in the nightcap to split the series, moving the Toros to 15-34 overall and 8-24 in CCAA play.

Prior to game one, Duran and Ruiz were honored for their four-year contributions to the Toro softball program.  See and hear what Duran and Ruiz had to say after their final game on Toro Diamond by pressing the above arrow.

Both pitchers were in control in game one, with just one run scored between the two offenses through five innings of work.

That one run, however, came via the long ball as Lyzette Reveles connected off Bianca Noriega for a 1-0 Toro lead in the second.

That's where the score remained until the Otters touched Duran for a pair of runs in the sixth to take the lead on a pair of RBI doubles.

Things looked bleak for the Toros as Noriega induced a ground out and strike out to begin the seventh, bringing Ruiz up to bat.  The senior delivered, smashing a 2-1 pitch over the center field fence to knot the game at 2-2.

CSUMB nearly took the lead in the ninth after a single and Toro error put runners at 1st and 2nd with one out.  After a line out, CSUMB waved home the lead runner on a base hit through the right side, but Damari Simon came up firing, and threw a perfect strike to catcher Rachael Sandoval for the third out of the inning.

That momentum carried over to the 10th when Ruiz came up with one out and launched her second blast over center for the walk-off.

Duran picked up the win in her final appearance in the Toro Diamond circle, fanning six without a walk on 128 total pitches.

The nightcap was much more offensive as the teams combined for three runs in the first inning and a half.  The Otters then erupted for four in the third and three in the sixth to take a 9-1 lead before the Toros pushed across two runs in the sixth, courtesy of a Renee Galindo double and Ruiz infield single.

But that would be as close as the home team would get as CSUMB added one in the seventh to account for the 10-3 final.

CSUDH was limited to just five hits on the day as Alyssa Valinches took the loss in the nightcap.
