Toros Take Twinbill Victory Over Stanislaus State in Different Fashion

CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team got two important California Collegiate Athletic Association wins over Stanislaus State in different fashion Saturday. Joe Bresson pitched a near complete-game gem to highlight game one's 3-2 walkoff and the Toro lineup wrangled up 11 RBI on 15 hits to win the nightcap 13-7.

The two wins today, along with Cal State San Bernardino's split with Cal State East Bay, moves the Toros (19-18, 12-13) a half of a game behind the third-place Coyotes in the CCAA South Division standings.

Game 1 – CSUDH 3, Stanislaus State 2
With both Bresson and Warrior starting pitcher Jordan Kron (6-4) entered the game having thrown more than eight innings in their previous outing, that momentum continued into Saturday's matchup.

Bresson had well-protected a 1-0 lead he got from Parker Hokuf's solo home run in the second, having limited three singles the first seven innings. It wasn't until the eighth that the Warriors had a base runner reach second on a two-out double. Stanislaus State (18-17, 9-14) followed with back-to-back hits to even the score at one apiece.

The Toros did retake the lead in their half of the inning, when Brady Conlan delivered a two-out base hit to drive in Brandon Polizzi from second.

Attempting for a complete-game for the second consecutive appearance, Bresson's day came to an end after giving up a leadoff single in the ninth. Anthony Cortez (4-1) came in and gave up the tying run in an unusual way. Right fielder Kyle Nixon hit into right center field for what was a double until an appeal play at first ruled him out. The Toros had guessed right on thinking Nixon did not touch first base on his way to second.

Kron's day also came to an end in the ninth after Miguel Castaneda led off with a triple. Reliver Ryan Paramo intentionally walked Hokuf to put runners at the corners but hitless Lester Salcedo sent a pitch deep into center field to drive in the winning run.

Bresson fanned five batters and didn't issue any walks while Kron struck out six and walked two.

Game 2 – CSUDH 13, Stanislaus State 7
While both teams were silent the first two innings, it was the Toros who struck first in the third when three consecutive hits loaded the bases and a RBI single from Nick Morelli followed by a three-run shot by Conlan gave CSUDH a 5-0 lead.

CSUDH scored another run in the fourth but it was in the fifth that the game was eventually put out of reach. With Morelli and Conlan at third and second, respectively, Castaneda added a run with a sacrifice fly, Hokuf drove in Conlan with a single and Johnny Palmer followed with a two-run blast to right field, giving the Toros a 10-2 lead and ending Warrior starter Nick Voumard's (4-5) day.

TyRay Gatewood (5-5) met the minimum five-inning requirement to earn his fifth win on the year, even though he allowed four runs on five hits and two walks on 67 pitches.

Conlan went on to record four of the 11 total RBI for the Toros and Tyler McLurg had a team-best three-hit night at the plate.

The two teams will meet again at Toro Field Sunday at 11 a.m.
