Guzman's Extra-Inning Walk-Off Gives Toros 6-5 Win Over Otters as CSUDH Splits Twinbill

CARSON -- Freshman Jazmin Guzman stroked the first pitch she saw up the middle to drive home Jacquelyn Landers to give Cal State Dominguez Hills a much-needed win in today's opening twinbill against Cal State Monterey Bay, snapping a four-game skid (shown above).

Alexis Viramontes went 3-for-5 with 3 RBI while senior Jamie Duran earned the win after tossing all nine innings before the visitors used a pair of late home runs and a 4-run 7th to take a 7-1 win in the nightcap.

The split brings the Toros to 14-33 overall, and 7-27 in CCAA play.

The Toros got the scoring started after Viramontes stroked her first hit of the day to drive home Damari Simon, who reached on an Otter error.  After CSUMB tied the game in the third, the Toros scored thrice in their third at-bat of the day, with a wild pitch, sacrifice fly and another Viramontes baseknock bringing home the runs.

CSUMB, however, earned one back in the fifth and took the lead in the sixth, the first of the day.

CSUDH would answer, courtesy of Viramontes' third hit and third RBI of the day in the seventh, setting up Guzman's heroics two innings later.

Jasmine Ruiz, Guzman and Simon added two hits apiece in the win, with Duran making 114 net pitches.

The nightcap was a pitchers' duel through five, with the Otters holding a 2-1 lead after Ruiz belted her ninth home run of the year in the third.

That's when the Otter offense took it up a notch, scoring once in the sixth before blowing it open in the seventh with four to take the eventual 7-1 win.

Ruiz belted three hits in the game as the Toros earned just five in the loss.

The day was sponsored by ASI, which purchased hot dogs, chips and a drink for the first 200 CSUDH students in attendance, as well as by the IT Division, which gave away two Ipad Minis to Justin Sadler and Rosa Ramos, who were in attendance when their winning tickets were drawn.

Prior to first pitch of game one, CSUDH IT VP Chris Manriquez threw out the honorary first pitch.

The two teams will complete their four-game set tomorrow morning at 11 am, following a Senior Day ceremony honoring Duran and Ruiz.
