TURLOCK — Three different Cal State Dominguez Hills softball players went yard to open the 16th annual Tournament of Champions, hosted by Stanislaus State, but the Toros couldn't recover from large deficits in the two defeats Friday. Chaminade went on to clinch the morning contest by mercy rule 14-4 and its fellow PacWest Conference member Holy Names took the afternoon game over the Toros 10-3.
Madison Murphy and Jazmyne Cortinas each hit solo shots in the first inning against the Silverswords while Jasmine Ruiz drove in all three runs in game two on a blast to left center against the Hawks.
Game 1 - Chaminade 14, CSUDH 4 (5 Innings)
After the Toros got two runs on solo homers in the first, the Swordsman used a pair of long balls in the second inning, only those drove in a combined five runs to take a 5-2 lead.
Jamie Duran (5-14) tossed four innings allowing nine runs, eight earned. Although the Swordsman got runners on base using 10 hits and three walks, Duran did strike out five.
The Toros did get two more runs in the fifth inning. Pinch-hitter Lyzette Reveles drew a one-out walk and Jazmin Guzman's two-out single put runners at the corners to setup back-to-back RBI hits by Cortinas and Analisa Nicholson.
Chaminade completed the mercy rule with a two-out grand slam. Luana Moreno had a rough first inning but settled down and held the Toros scoreless for four innings.
Game 2 - Holy Names 10, CSUDH 3

A Toro had reached as far as second base in each of those innings against Kristina Carbajal, who tossed a complete-game despite surrendering six hits and walks each along with two hit-by-pitches.
