STOCKTON — Although the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team dropped a heartfelt 68-53 decision to Cal State East Bay in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament final, the Toros did have smiles on their faces at the end of the game as soon as they learned senior Breanne Garcia became the program's new career points leader Saturday night.
The business major scored 12 points in the game but got eight in the first quarter that was needed to break teammate and friend Monay Lee's record that was set in sportsmanship fashion at Chico State on Feb. 25. Garcia now has 1,477 career points at the end of the night while Lee reached 1,472 to break Tameka Blue's mark.
Here is Garcia and Toros coach Molly Goodenbour following the game:
Despite the loss, the Toros will now wait to hear if their name will be called for the NCAA Division II Championship. The Selection Show will broadcast Sunday at 7 p.m. and can be found at NCAA.com.
In a rematch from last year's conference tournament championship game, the contest was a game of cat-and-mouse. Neither team had led by more than 10 points for the first 35 minutes. But a 12-6 run in favor of CSUEB (27-4) gave the Pioneers the win.
The Pioneers had led for 29:07 in the game but the Toros had kept paced with them in a physical battle.
The Toros largest lead was three, when a pair of Garcia free throws made the score 15-12 nearly nine minutes into the first quarter.
In addition to the dozen points, Garcia also had five assists and nine of the Toros 31 rebounds to lead the column. However, Garcia got into early foul trouble that forced her to sit out. She played 20 minutes, which is 14 minutes below her season average.
Imari Brown and Femi Hamilton led the effort off the bench with 11 points each.
CSUDH couldn't find an answer to Pioneers leading scorer Tori Breshers, who scored 23 points on the evening to become the tournament's most valuable player.
Garcia and fellow senior Kielyn Wilson both were named to the CCAA All-Tournament team.
