Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Toros Season Ends with 82-53 Loss to Seawolves in NCAA Tourney Opener

AZUSA - Breanne Garcia scored 12 points, four each had eight but it wasn't enough as the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team's 2015-16 season came to an end after second-seeded Alaska Anchorage ran away with an 82-53 win in the opening round of the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship Friday afternoon.

CSUDH's season comes to an end at 22-10 but the senior class of Garcia, Monay Lee, Julia Poecksteiner, Anandi Jimenez, Jenee Gooden and Kielyn Wilson have combined for a record of 77-44 during their time with the Cardinal and Gold.

Nothing seemed to have clicked for the Toros from start to finish this afternoon, for they shot under 30 percent from the field for a majory of the game. They went into the locker room shooting 16.7 percent but did shoot better in the second to finish 31 percent.

But much like the last meeting last Halloween, when Seawolves (34-2) beat the Toros, CSUDH could not overcome the UAA pressure defense. The Toros conceded 22 turnovers while the Seawolves had nine steals.

Garcia, who now finishes her CSUDH career with a program record 1,489 career points, got nine of her dozen points on the free throw line. She went 1-for-9 from the field with the lone basket being from beyond the arc.

Femi Hamilton, Gooden, Jimenez and Wilson each had eight points.

Alaska Anchorage had four players reach double figures in points, with leading scorer Megan Mullings dropping 17. The Seawolves had also dominated the boards, 52-37, with both Mullings and Keiahnna Engle each grabbing nine.

Wilson led the effort on the glass with eight.

The Toros only lead was at the beginning, when Garcia dropped the game's first four points from the charity stripe less than two minutes into the contest. The Seawolves had led by as many as 32 early in the fourth quarter.

Post-Game Quotes
Head Coach Molly Goodenbour
On the Game
"We played hard and tried to execute a game plan, but tournament play is where you really miss a player like Monay Lee and it showed at CCAA and NCAA tourney games. Despite that, I felt our team gave a great effort as they have done all season and thought their DH careers and I am extremely proud of seniors, who have transformed the program over the course of their time here."

On the Senior Class
"Though it's sad to lose them I know they are prepared for whatever lies ahead in their lives. They have developed and matured tremendously and I'm proud of each of them and know they have the tools and resolve necessary to lead successful and fulfilling lives."

On the future of CSUDH women's basketball
"The program will look very different next year," Goodenbour continues. "We have huge holes to fill and it will take some strong recruiting on our part and a lot of commitment on the part of our returners to getting in the gym and improving weaknesses. Each year is challenging in its own way."

Senior Forward Kielyn Wilson
On the Alaska Anchorage Pressure Defense
"They have a lot of big players so our key, in any game, is to rebound, no matter how tall the other team is. We are a small team, so like always, we need to get boards. They were in the zone so it was easy to get as many as I could."

On if the last game with Alaska Anchorage (Oct. 31) helped prepare for it
"We were not the team as we are now at the beginning of the year. I feel we were more prepared together as a team now than we were then. We came in as if we've never seen them before."

On the senior class laying the foundation of the program
"I feel we set good a foundation. I was here (prior to Goodenbour's arrival), and just to see the transition from a new coach, a new team and new players, I think we did a great job. We're really close so that gave us more of a boost in our game because of the bond that we have as people, as teammates and as sisters. Hopefully whoever comes in can carry that on and finish strong.
