Late Rally Not Enough as Coyotes Take Opener Before CSUSB Sweeps Series

CARSON -- Junior Madison Murphy and senior Jasmine Ruiz both went yard in a 2-run third inning, but those blasts weren't enough to overcome nine early runs by visiting Cal State San Bernardino as the Coyotes took today's opener by a 9-5 count.

Despite Ruiz belting another blast in the nightcap, the Coyotes earned a 6-4 win in the late game to sweep the regular season series, dropping CSUDH to 7-16, 4-12 CCAA.

The Coyotes took it to Toro starter Jamie Duran in the opener as the senior southpaw lasted just 3.0 innings while allowing 13 hits and nine earned runs.

Unlike yesterday when Coyote Starter Cassandra Williams stifled the Toro bats, with Murphy and Ruiz earning the first hits off Williams in the game, both solo shots to get the CSUDH bats going.

That momentum continued into the fourth inning as the Toros knocked out Williams after a walk to Damari Simon and ensuing singles from Jazmin Guzman and Lyzette Reveles, with Reveles bringing home Simon to prompt the pitching change.

Ivy Campbell greeted Coyote reliever Jackie DeLoza with an RBI groundout to chip away another run, with Murphy driving home the final run of the frame by pulling a double down the right field line to make it a 9-5 game.

DeLoza would settle down, however, limiting the Toros to just three hits over the final three innings to pick up the win.

Murphy roped a pair of hits in the loss while Toro reliever Victoria Franks held the Coyotes scoreless in 4.0 innings of work, allowing just two hits.

Things began promising in the nightcap as the Toros jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second, courtesy of Simon's mammoth shot to dead center and a RBI single to Reveles.

CSUSB, however, answered with a pair in the fourth and three more in the sixth to take a 5-2 lead, before Reveles got one back with a home run to deep center, her second of the year.

Ashley Leffingwell, however, evened Reveles' blast with a solo shot of her own, before Ruiz looked to mount a late-inning rally by leading off the seventh with an opposite field shot.

Two batters later, Guzman drew a walk on four pitches to bring up Reveles, but starter turned reliever Williams to pop out to second base to end the threat and give the Coyotes a four-game sweep.

Ruiz, Simon and Reveles each belted two hits as part of 10 for the hosts, but the Toros left nine runners on base in the nightcap.

CSUDH will continue hosting duties next weekend as San Francisco State visits Carson, with first pitch of game one's twinbill set for a 12 noon start on Friday, March 11.
