Castaneda's Five RBI Leads Toros in Nightcap to Split Twinbill

CARSON -- Junior transfer Miguel Castaneda put on an offensive show in the nightcap of today's twinbill hosting San Francisco State, belting his first home run of the year en route to a 5RBI effort as Cal State Dominguez Hills took a 9-2 win in game two after the Gators escaped with a 7-5 decision in the opener.

The Toros move to 6-8 overall, and 1-4 with their first league win.

After the two teams remained scoreless heading into the bottom of the third, Brady Conlan began the scoring with an RBI double to left, plating Brandon Polizzi, who singled with one out, moved to second on a passed ball and advanced to third on a Gator fielding error.

Castaneda then followed with a towering shot to left center for the final three runs of the frame.

SFSU cut its deficit in half with two in the fifth, but the Toros blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning with five runs, the big blow coming on Castaneda's 2RBI single and RBI baseknocks by Peter Hokuf and Conland, and a bases-loaded walk by Trevor North.

That was plenty for starter Joe Bresson, who went 6.0 innings to pick up his first win of the year.

Castaneda and Conlan each roped three hits, with Johnny Palmer adding to the multi-hit effort with two.

In the opener, Castaneda began the scoring with an RBI single for a quick 1-0 lead only to see the visitors score single runs in the third and fourth, and plate four runs in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead.

After the Gators added another single run in the sixth, CSUDH mounted a rally with three scores in the bottom of the frame on RBI singles by Conlan and Adrian Padilla, as well as a basesl-loaded free pass from Palmer.

Down 7-4 heading into the ninth, the Toros had runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out, with a Polizzi sacrifice fly bringing the tying run to the plate in Hokuf.  Faced with a hitter's count at 2-1, however, reliever Ulices Moreno got the 2-hole batter to fly out to center, earning the save and the game one win.

Tyler McLurg roped two hits in the loss, with starter TyRay Gatewood taking the loss to drop to 1-3 on the year.

The two teams continue their 3-game series tomorrow, with first pitch set for 12 noon at Toro Field.
