Toros Take Chomp Out of Gators to Win Series

CARSON -- Newcomer Miguel Castaneda belted three hits while Johnny Palmer drove in three runs as the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team took the rubber game of this weekend's three-game set against San Francisco State in a 9-0 rout.

The Toros improve to 7-8 overall, 2-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. It is also the first shutout of the season in favor of the Toros.

Luke Laurita pitched 6.0 innings to earn the win, fanning two while scattering just two hits. The bullpen was also stellar as Albert Flores, Rigoberto Fernandez and Anthony Cortez each tossed one-hit shutouts the rest of the way.

Palmer's 3-run knock came in the sixth inning, when he sent a pitch to right field to stretch a triple. Shawn Sweeney followed with a sacrifice fly to score Palmer and give the Toros a 6-0 lead. The Toros also added three more runs in that inning, one of which was unearned. Prior to Palmer's triple, Parker Hokuf doubled down the left field line to score in Guzman.

The Toros eventual game-winning run came in the third inning. Brady Conlan hit a one-out single through the left side and scored all the way from first on Castaneda's two-bagger to right center.

Joe Chedid took the loss for the Gators (8-8, 2-4 CCAA) after allowing the winning run in the third inning. It was all he reached as the bullpen took over in the fourth.

CSUDH continues CCAA play next weekend with a home-and-home series with UC San Diego. The first two games will be played in La Jolla Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a twinbill at Toro Field Sunday at 11 a.m.
