Donerson, Toros Use Long Ball to Bring Down Eagles

CARSON -- Daryl Donerson had three hits and RBI each and Miguel Castaneda hit a two-run homer in the seventh that proved to be the difference in Cal State Dominguez Hills' 10-5 non-conference win over NCAA and PacWest Conference newcomer Concordia Irvine Tuesday afternoon.

The Toros, winner of three of the last four contests, improve to 13-14 overall.

Although he picked up the win, Luke Laurita (2-3) surrendered all four of the five runs in his five-inning out on the long ball. The Eagles (19-18) took a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run that hit the top of the left field fence, while the other two-run shot in the fifth was a deep fly ball to right with the aid of the wind.

The CSUDH bullpen led by Albert Flores' two-inning shutout performance held the Eagles scoreless, and had induced three double plays.

Trailing 3-1 in the home half of the third, the Toros erased that deficit and had taken the lead. Nick Morelli and Brady Conlan led off with base hits and back-to-back base hits from Lester Salcedo and Parker Hokuf tied the game. Adrian Guzman put the Toros up front with a RBI double to right and Donerson followed with a two-run single to right center to give the Toros a 6-3 lead.

After Concordia relieved starter Isaiah Terrazas (4-2) in the third, Collin Orellana would 10 straight until the seventh inning, when he hit Conlan and Castaneda followed with a two-run blast to left field.

CSUDH returns to action in the California Collegiate Athletic Association this weekend with Cal State East Bay visiting Toro Field. Both days are scheduled for 11 a.m. first pitches with Saturday being a doubleheader.
