No. 3 Jacks Show No Mercy in 8-0 and 12-3 Wins to Sweep Series

CARSON -- A five-run first inning highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Kayln Paque was more than enough this morning as No. 3 Humboldt State limited host Cal State Dominguez Hills to just three hits in an 8-0 win to open today's twinbill before erupting for 12 runs in a 12-3 win to sweep today's double and the season series.

Damari Simon drove home two runs in the nightcap as the Toros dropped their sixth-straight game, falling to 9-26 overall, and 6-22 CCAA.

After dropping yesterday's double to open the kick off the weekend, the Toros looked to forge and split and give them much-needed momentum heading into next weekend's prestigious Tournament of Champions tournament.

The visiting Jacks, however, had other ideas after scoring five first-inning runs in the opener, all but putting the game away early.  CSUDH managed a hit in the first inning, but was held hitless until the bottom of the fifth after HSU strung across three more runs in the top half of the fifth for an 8-run lead.

Alexis Viramontes led off the fifth with a single after running the count full, but after Lyzette Reveles stroked a pinch-hit single to put two runners on with one out, Madison Murphy fanned and Jazmin Guzman grounded out to second base to invoke the run-rule.

The nightcap saw the Jacks continue their offensive prowess by scoring the game's first 12 runs, with Tiffany Hollingsworth belting a grand slam to center in the fourth for the final four HSU runs.

The Toros finally got on the board after Simon stroked a one-out double to right field with the bases loaded, before Jasmine Ruiz brought home Jazmyne Cortinas after hammering an 0-2 pitch to left field one batter later.

But it was too little, too late as HSU completed the sweep in the 12-3 decision.

Victoria Franks took the loss after lasting just 2.2 innings, allowing 5 earned runs on five hits.

CSUDH will look to get on the winning track this weekend at the TOC, first facing Chaminade University on Friday, April 1, with first pitch set for 9 am.
