Toros Can't Complete CCAA Sweep as No. 8 Otters Rally in Series Finale

SEASIDE — The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team took an early lead but couldn't hold on to it as Cal State Monterey Bay scored three runs in the fifth and eighth innings to sneak away with a 7-3 win Saturday afternoon to prevent the Toros from sweeping the California Collegiate Athletic Association series.

Despite the loss, the Toros (12-14, 7-10 CCAA) had already claimed their third conference series win of the season with the doubleheader win Friday.

The Toros took a 1-0 lead in the first inning without having recorded a hit. Brandon Polizzi opened up with walking on a full-count pitch, stole second and scored on back-to-back groundouts. CSUDH then took a 2-0 lead in the fifth when Parker Hokuf led off with a double to left and scored on Daryl Donerson's RBI single up the middle.

Peter Fierros, in his first start of the season, lasted four innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks but did struck out four.

The lead disappeared in the home half of the inning. CSUMB (19-6, 8-5) started with two runners in scoring position and a two-run single erased the Toros lead. Another base hit up the middle gave the Otters a 3-2 lead.

Rigoberto Fernandez took over in the fifth after Fierros couldn't get a batter out. Fernandez retired the side without allowing any more runs.

CSUDH answered back in its half of the sixth. Nick Morelli opened up with a single up the middle, stole second, took third on a fly out to right and scored on a fielder's choice hit by Lester Salcedo.

The Otters would break the 3-3 tie again in their half of the sixth when Fernandez conceded a leadoff single, two wild pitches and sacrifice fly to score in the run.

Otter starter Jared Koenig lasted 5.2 innings but Drew Kozain, the losing pitcher in Friday's game one, got the win after throwing a 1.1 inning shutout.

The Toros return home for the next four games, starting Tuesday with PacWest Conference and NCAA Division II newcomer Concordia. First pitch is at 2 p.m.
