No. 3 Humboldt State Chops Down Toros in 8-1 and 5-0 Decisions

CARSON -- Off to the program's best start since the 2007 season, visiting and No. 3 ranked Humboldt State showed why it's the class of the CCAA after taking an 8-1 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills to open today's twinbill on a warm Friday afternoon before handing the Toros a 5-0 shutout to sweep today's double-header.

Jasmine Ruiz earned one of the Toros' five hits on the day, with her single bringing home the lone run of the afternoon for the hosts.

The Jacks took a 3-0 lead in their first at-bat as Tiffany Hollingsworth provided the big blow with a 2-run blast.

The Toros replied with Ruiz's RBI in the bottom of the first, but it was all HSU after that as the Jacks added three in the second and two in the fifth to put the game away in the 8-1 final.

Five different Toros earned a hitas Jamie Duran took the loss to fall to 5-12 on the year.

The nightcap started differently as starter Alyssa Valinches kept the high-powered Jack offense off the board in the first two innings.  Unfortunately, HSU plated two runners in the third to take a 2-0 lead, and added single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh to come away with the 5-0 win and Friday afternoon sweep.

CSUDH didn't get its first hit until a Madison Murphy double in the third inning, with Ivy Campbell and Analisa Nicholson adding baseknocks later in the game.

Valinches took the loss in the complete-game effort, fanning three batters while issuing five free passes.

The two teams will complete the four-game set tomorrow morning, with first pitch of game one set for 11:00 am on Toro Diamond.
