CARSON -- Cal State San Marcos quickly struck early with 5-run first inning and Cal State Dominguez Hills tried to fight back late in the baseball game, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars defeated the Toros, 7-4, Sunday to complete the four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association sweep.
Reigning CCAA Player of the Week Jeffrey Gogue (3-2) looked the opposite of it against the Cougars (14-14, 6-10 CCAA). CSUSM quickly took a 1-0 lead on three consecutive game-opening hits. Gogue struck out the cleanup hitter but his day came to an end after a two-run single by the seventh hitter put the Cougars ahead 4-0.
Peter Fierros came in and retired the next two batters, one of which was a trade for the Cougars fifth run, to end the inning. Fierros carried the Toros (10-13, 5-9 CCAA) by throwing 5.2 innings allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk. Anthony Cortez pitched two shutout innings while Albert Flores pitched a quick ninth inning.
The Toros were held hitless against Manny Barragan (3-3) their trip through the lineup. One-two hitters Brandon Polizzi and Nick Morelli got on base with singles, Brady Conlan hit a high bouncer on the left side of the mound for a infield single but Barragan's throw to first sailed wide and it allowed the Toros to bring two runs across to cut the Cougars lead to 6-2.
While the Cougars got their seventh run in the fifth, the Toros had a rally going in the eighth. Adrian Guzman led off with a base hit on the left side and Polizzi put runners on second and third with a double to left center. Morelli and Conlan both delivered RBI singles into the outfield to make it 7-4 and end Barragan's day.
Taylor Ahearn checked in and got the Toros retired on a double play followed by a ground out en route to his first save of the season.
CSUDH will begin a three-game CCAA series at Cal State Monterey Bay this weekend. The two ballclubs agreed to make Friday's contest a doubleheader and Saturday a single contest.
