Simon Says Home Run Will Win Game, And It Does in Opener as Toros Split at Stanislaus

TURLOCK -- Freshman Damari Simon (pictured) helped give senior pitcher Jamie Duran a belated birthday present by belting a 6th-inning 2-run home run to break a 1-1 tie against host Stanislaus State, and Duran did her part by surviving a 2-on, 2-out rally and inducing a ground ball for the final out as Cal State Dominguez Hills took a 3-2 win in today's opening game on Warrior Softball Field.

Stanislaus State, however, took a 12-11, 10 inning slugfest in which the teams combined for 31 hits, including nine that went for extra bases with Simon and Cortinas each going deep.

In the win that snapped a five-game skid, the Toros got on the board first after Jazmin Guzman roped a double down the left field line to plate Simon, who scored after doubling to left center to begin the frame.

Stanislaus State knotted the game at 1-1 two innings later, where it stood until the top of the seventh.

In that frame, a one-out walk to Analisa Nicholson preceded Simon's at-bat, and the freshman launched the first pitch she saw over the left field fence for a two-run lead in the win.

Duran tossed a complete game, fanning three Warriors in the process to pick up her fourth win of the year.

Both teams' bats stayed hot in the nightcap, with Simon again leading the Toro charge.  Her 2RBI baseknock in the first accounted for two of the inning's three runs, with Simon belting her second long ball of the day an inning later, a 3-run shot that gave the Toros the lead once again after the Warriors scored five times in their first at bat of game two.

Tied at 6-6 heading into the fourth, a Nicholson RBI double set the stage for Jazmyne Cortinas, who launched a pinch-hit grand slam for a 5-run frame and an 11-6 lead.

That would be the extent of the Toro offense, however, as the Warriors scored twice in both the fourth and fifth innings and once on the seventh to tie the game, sending the contest into extras.

After two innings without a run scored, the hosts finally ended the marathon in the 10th when a leadoff single and groundout one batter later set the stage for a walk-off single for the 23rd and final run of the game.

Nicholson went 4-for 6 with three runs scored, while Simon's 5RBI and Cortinas' 4RBI accounted for the majority of the Toro offense.

Starter Victoria Franks went the distance, throwing 193 overall pitches while fanning seven batters.

The Toros return home this weekend to host Cal State San Bernardino for a pair of twinbills beginning Friday at 12 noon at Toro Diamond.
