Toros Rack Up 17 Hits in Win Over NAIA No. 16 Westmont

CARSON -- Despite losing the lead in the fifth inning, the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team rallied with a 4-run sixth and the bullpen held Westmont's bats in check to secure a 8-6 non-conference win at Toro Field Tuesday afternoon.

It was a slugfest for both teams as the Toros (5-7) hit 17 of 25 total hits in the game. Each team also stretched three doubles.

Both teams' starting pitchers were pulled out before the fifth inning. Toro starter Rigoberto Fernandez allowed a hit and struck out four but free passes was an issue as he allowed six walks.

The team of Albert Flores (1-0) and Peter Fierros combined for 3.1 perfect innings and Anthony Cortez picked up the save despite an unearned run scored in his outing in the ninth.

Westmont, which entered the 2016 season ranked No. 16 in the NAIA Preseason Top 25, pulled starter Brendon Shoemake in the third after allow four runs on five hits and four walks.

The Toros struck ahead early with three runs in the second. Miguel Castaneda led off with a double down the left field line, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Johnny Palmer's single to center. As Parker Hokuf took third on a wild pitch, the catcher's throw for the out attempt sailed into the outfield and allowed the first baseman to score the second run. Brandon Polizzi would follow later in the inning with a RBI single through the right side to bring home Palmer from third.

After the Toros got a run in the third to take a 4-0 lead, the lead disappeared as the Warriors (14-3) scored twice in the fourth and added three more in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead.

CSUDH's rally in the sixth began with Trevor North singling to center field and advancing to third on Hokuf's double. Pinch-hitter Shawn Sweeney tied the game with a RBI single to right and Jeff Gilstrap followed with the go-ahead single to left.

With two out and runners on first and second, Brandon Polizzi laid down a bunt and used his legs to earn himself an infield hit and load the bases for No. 2 Nick Morelli, who's base hit through the right side drove in two runs to take an 8-5 Toro lead.

The Toros return to California Collegiate Athletic Association play this weekend with San Francisco State visiting Toro Field Saturday (doubleheader) and Sunday. Both are set for 11 a.m. pitches.
