Wolves Sneak Away with Win After Toros Tied Game in Eighth

CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team rallied with a five-run eighth inning, but Western Oregon answered back with a run in the ninth to escape with a 7-6 non-conference win over the Toros Sunday afternoon.

Trailing 6-1 in the eighth, the Toros (3-1) got the bases loaded with Parker Hokuf drawing a leadoff walk, followed a Miguel Castaneda single and back-to-back walks by Jeff Gilstrap and Adrian Guzman on a combined nine pitches forced in the second run.

After a pitching change, the Toros got two more runs across on Trevor North's single to left followed by a fielder's choice hit by Johnny Palmer. Nick Morelli hit a fly ball to right field deep enough to score the fifth run and back-to-back hit-by-pitches to Brady Conlan and Hokuf forced in the tying run.

Although Anthony Cortez (2-1) picked up two wins during the San Diego Christian series, the right-hander got himself into trouble when he issued back-to-back walks to start the ninth and a sacrifice bunt moved two runners into scoring position. The Wolves regained the lead with a sacrifice fly and Jacob Fricke (1-0) retired the side allowing only one walk to seal the win for WOU (3-2).

Four different Toros reached base on hits but were limited to singles. The Wolves, meanwhile had three of their dozen hits as doubles.

Starter Luke Laurita pitched himself to the sixth inning allowing two runs on seven hits and walk. The Toros bullpen went on to concede four runs.

Western Oregon's starter, Trey Smith, lasted only five innings but only surrendered one run in the fourth. He also allowed two hits but did issue three walks.

The Toros play a three-game series with the PacWest Conference's Cal Baptist starting Thursday at 2 p.m.
