Cal Baptist's Ace Silences Toros' Bats in Series Opener

CARSON -- Sophomore outfielder Brandon Polizzi had a leadoff double to start off Cal State Dominguez Hills' offense but Cal Baptist's ace Tyson Miller went the rest of the game striking out a dozen and allowing four hits on 101 pitches to give the Lancers a 3-0 series-opening win over the Toros Thursday afternoon.
 
The three-game set shifts over to CBU in Riverside Friday at 6 p.m. before returning to Toro Field for the finale Saturday at noon.
 
Polizzi had two of the Toros (3-2) two hits off of Miller (1-0) while fellow outfielder Nick Morelli and designated hitter Kevin Lugo had one.
 
Toros starter TyRay Gatewood (0-1) surrendered one run in the fourth inning, allowing back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners and set up a sacrifice fly. The right-hander went on to pitch 7.1 innings surrendering six hits and two walks.
 
Rigoberto Fernandez went the rest of the way and allowed a two-run homer in the ninth.
 
Left-fielder Brian Ruhm and Bryce Macy each had two of the Lancers (3-1) total hits. Andrew Montoya's home run was the only one for extra bases.
