Big First Innings Doom Toros in Two Losses on Day Two of Desert Stinger

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Less than 24 hours after coming up on the winning end of a pair of offensive contests, the Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team suffered its first loss of the 2016 season after dropping a 9-6 decision to the University of Colorado - Colorado Springs on day two of the touranment, before Azusa Pacific took an 8-3 decision to keep the Toros winless today.

Jasmine Ruiz (pictured) went yard as part of a 2-for-4 effort while Analisa Nicholson pounded three hits in the opening-game loss as CSUDH dips to 2-2 on the year.

After a Nicholson RBI single got the Toros on the board in the top of the first, Colorado Springs scored five times in the first, the big blow coming on a 2-run error and a 2RBI double.

The Toros answered with two runs over the next three innings on a Mountain Lion error and Madison Murphy opposite field RBI double, until UC plated a single run in the fifth and three more in the sixth, with the final three runs proving the difference after Ruiz belted her 2-run shot and Lyzette Reveles doubled home Kayla Lock for the game's final runs.

Jamie Duran took the loss, fanning six against two walks.

In the nightcap, the Cougars scored the game's first six runs in their first four at-bats, before CSUDH answered with a pair in the fourth.  APU, however, got those two runs back in the sixth to put the game away despite Madison Murphy's second hit of the game, an RBI single to plate Jazmyne Cortinas.

Victoria Franks took the loss after 3.0 innings of work, with Murphy, Cortinas and Rachael Sandoval knocking two hits.

CSUDH will conclude the Desert Stinger Tournament tomorrow afternoon, taking on New Mexico Highlands at 2 pm.
