Offense Rules as Toros Win Both at Desert Stinger

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Senior Jamie Duran tossed 5.0 innings of two-hit ball while all Cal State Dominguez Hills starters notched at least one hit as the Toros rolled to a 9-1 win over University of Mary in their first game of the Desert Stinger Tournament, before a 14-hit attack trumped five errors as CSUDH bested Northwest Nazarene in an 11-9 slugfest to kick off the 2016 season.

CSUDH improves to 2-0 for the first time since 2013 when the Toros went 4-0 to begin the season en route to reaching the NCAA Super Regionals.

In the opener against the Marauders, true freshman Jazmin Guzman began the offensive onslaught by jacking a home run in her first collegiate at-bat to stake Duran to a quick 2-0 lead.  Analisa Nicholson doubled the score an inning later on a 2RBI single, before true freshman Damari Simon added another two runs with a blast to make it 6-0.

Two innings later, a pair of doubles brought home two more runs for the Cardinal and Gold, before a wild pitch secured the ninth and final run in the 4th inning of play.

Despite University of Mary scoring an unearned run in the fifth, it wasn't enough to prevent the mercy run rule in the 9-1 decision.

Nicholson, Simon and Rachael Sandoval all stroked a pair of hits against the Marauders, with Nicholson, Simon and Guzman all driving home two runs each in the 5-inning contest.  Newcomer Sandoval delivered a pair of big blows with two doubles to begin her collegiate career with a flurry while Duran starred in the circle, facing just two batters over the minimum 15 required for a 5-inning game.

The Jazmin, Jasmine, Jazmyne show took over in the late game, with the trio combining for a single and two doubles in the first inning en route to a 3-0 lead.

NNU tied the score in the 3rd inning after three Toro errors, and then took a huge lead after five runs and another error one inning later, adding one more in the 5th to give the Crusaders a 9-3 lead.

Down by six, however, Jazmyne Cortinas drew a bases-loaded walk before NNU helped the Toro comeback with an error of its own to plate a pair of unearned runs, before Sandoval brought home two more runs to bring the Toros to within 9-8.

Guzman, who went 3-for-4 with 3RBI in the game, continued that momentum with a 2RBI double to close the scoring in the frame, before Simon belted a solo shot in the 6th to close the scoring.

Newcomer Victoria Franks earned her first win as a Toro after tossing the final 3.1 innings in relief, scattering four hits with five strikeouts.

Madison Murphy, Jasmine Ruiz, Simon and Sandoval all belted two hits in the offensive show as the teams combined for 25 hits.

CSUDH continues the Desert Stinger with a 4:30 pm contest against Colorado Springs, followed by a 7 pm showdown against Azusa Pacific.
