Castaneda's Leadoff Double Sets Up Wild Walkoff Win on Opening Day

CARSON -- After a costly error set up the game-tying run in the ninth, San Diego Christian's baseball team made a mistake of its own during the home side of the inning that allowed Cal State Dominguez Hills to sneak away with a 6-5 walkoff win on a balmy opening day Friday.

Miguel Castaneda led the inning off with a double and as late-inning sub Daryl Donerson tried to move the runner over to third on the bunt, Hawk pitcher Codi Scanlon's throw to first was high and the error allowed Castaneda to deliver the walkoff.

Castaneda had four of the Toros hits, Parker Hokuf doubled in his CSUDH debut and leadoff man Brandon Polizzi had three hits including a two-bagger.

After a slow start which saw three runs scored in the first two innings, TyRay Gatewood settled down and held the Hawks scoreless until the eighth inning when after he allowed a leadoff single to end his day.

The Toros scored a run the fourth and fifth innings and grabbed the lead in the seventh. With one out and bases loaded, Castaneda singled up the middle to score Polizzi from third to tie the game while the pinch-hitting Donerson put the Toros ahead 4-3 on a fielder's choice.

The lead did not last long, however, as the Hawks answered back in the eighth. Gatewood surrendered a leadoff single to end his day and SDC used a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to tie the game.

CSUDH retook the lead in its half of the eighth when Tyler McLurg led off with a walk and scored from second on Polizzi's single.

The Toros couldn't lock up the win in the ninth as the Hawks took advance on a fielding error during a sacrifice bunt attempt to setup the tying run.

The two teams return to Toro Field for a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch is at 11 a.m.
