Sonoma State Takes Two in Toros Conference Opener

ROHNERT PARK — After having nearly 13 days away from competition, the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team opened its California Collegiate Athletic Association season a bit sluggish as Sonoma State slugged its way to a 11-3, 7-2 doubleheader victory over the Toros on a perfect Saturday afternoon.

The Toros drop to 4-6 overall and will try to salvage a win over the Seawolves (5-9, 3-2 CCAA) Sunday at 11 a.m.

Game 1 - Sonoma State 11, CSUDH
After the first two Sonoma State batters were retired to start the second inning, the Seawolves loaded the bases on consecutive base hits. On a full count, TyRay Gatewood (1-2) found the upper right corner on a full count to ring up ninth hitter Rayson Romero to escape the threat.

The Seawolves didn't cool down after stranding the bases loaded. An inning later, Sonoma State tallied seven hits, including a leadoff double, to give the Seawolves a 5-0 lead.

The Toros did answer back with a run of their own to start the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Johnny Palmer hit a hard ground ball to third but Ryan O'Malley lost his balance in the process of snatching the ball and it allowed Nick Morelli to score the run.

Gatewood's day would come to an end in the home half of the inning when a leadoff hit-by-pitch set up a two-run shot by Grant St. Martin.

Gatewood did strike out five but allowed 11 hits in his 3.1 inning outing. Jeffrey Gogue did hold Sonoma State scoreless until the ninth inning, when a 3-run triple gave the Seawolves the 11-3 lead.

Brady Conlan had two of the Toros' nine hits, but the CSUDH offense was the victim of 12 strikeouts, eight from starting pitcher Ryan Luna.

Game 2 - Sonoma State 7, CSUDH 2
It appeared to be a pitching duel the first four innings. Joe Bresson (0-1) and Seawolf starter Haydin Turpin (2-1) both held their opponents to at least two hits.

It wasn't until the home half of the fifth when the first run came across. A leadoff single followed by a stolen base and a error setup a runner at third. A groundout allowed the Seawolves to take a 1-0 lead.

Sonoma State added four more runs in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead but CSUDH responded in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Kevin Lugo led off with a walk, Johnny Palmer followed with a single and Adrian Padilla hit a double to left center to score both runs. It was the only extra base hit the Toros had made in the evening cap.
