Simon's Blast Spurs 8-Inning Win Over Visiting UCSD in Opener as Toros Split Saturday

CARSON -- Down 4-0 heading into the bottom of the 4th inning to a UC San Diego team that had won the first two games of the series yesterday, a 2-run shot by freshman Damari Simon in the bottom half of the frame gave Cal State Dominguez Hills momentum, and the Toros used that rush to score thrice in the 5th to tie the game at 5-5, and win the game in the 8th on a Triton miscue.

The Tritons, however, regrouped to take a 7-1 win in the nightcap to take the season series, 3-1, moving the Toros to 6-7, 3-6 CCAA.

UCSD got off to a quick start in the opener, scoring three runs in the 1st and one in the 4th to take a 4-0 lead, but then gave it back in the bottom of the 4th to allow the Toros to get back into the contest.

In the frame, Jazmyne Cortinas benefited from a two-out Triton throwing error that allowed her to sprint to second base.  That brought up Simon, who clobbered a 2-0 offering from UCSD starter Lexi Edwards deep over the center field fence to bring home a pair of unearned runs.

After the Tritons answered with a single run in the 5th to increase their lead to 5-2, the Toro bats awoke for five hits, plating three runs to knot the game at 5-5.

Alexis Viramontes and Ivy Campbell began the frame with back-to-back singles, with Madison Murphy's ensuing single bringing home Viramontes from second.

Lyzette Reveles then singled to bring home Campbell, prompting a pitching change.

That brought little relief, however, as Jasmine Ruiz greeted Lauren Brown with an RBI double to bring home Reveles with the equalizer.

That's where the game remained until the 8th when Cortinas began the frame with a double to left field, and came home three batters later when a smash by Viramontes to second base proved too hot to handle, scampering away from the Triton infield and allowing Cortinas to come home with the walk-off.

Ruiz, Simon, Viramontes and Campbell each belted a pair of hits in the win as Jamie Duran tossed a complete-game win, her third of the year.

The nightcap looked to continue the scoring surge as each team scored a run in the 1st inning, with CSUDH's courtesy of an Analisa Nicholson RBI single to score Ruiz.

UCSD continued the offense in its next at-bat with four runs, using a pair of Toro errors and two hits for their offense.

That was plenty for Triton starter Milana Casillas, who cruised through 4.0 innings before running into trouble in the 5th and making way for Lauren Brown, who tossed 2.1 innings of no-hit relief.

Ruiz earned two hits in the loss as CSUDH managed five hits after 11 in the opener.

The Toros take to the road next week for a non-conference twinbill, facing Cal Baptist on Saturday.
