Toros Can't Take Err Out of Home Opener in Losses to UC San Diego

CARSON -- Finally opening its homestand after the first nine games of 2016 on the road, Cal State Dominguez Hills was swept by visiting UC San Diego by 5-1 and 11-5 counts after making five errors in the twinbill.

CSUDH falls to 5-6 on the year, and 2-4 in CCAA play.

The Toros and Tritons engaged in a pitcher's duel to begin play with Toro Jamie Duran and Triton Lexi Edwards limiting their opposition to just 1 run through the first five innings of play.

That all changed in the 6th inning after CSUDH committed a pair of errors to allow four runs to cross home plate, three of which were unearned.  UCSD had a chance to blow the game open by loading the bases with two out, but reliever Victoria Franks induced a line out to quell the rally, keeping CSUDH within striking distance.

Edwards, however, had other thoughts for the visitors as she limited the Toros to just two hits in the complete game win.

The nightcap saw both offenses awaken early as the Toros matched a 3-spot by UCSD in the 3rd inning with their own three runs in the bottom half, the big blow coming on an Alexis Viramontes 2RBI opposite field single, followed by a solo shot by Nicholson one inning later for a 4-3 Toro lead.

UC San Diego, however, answered with six runs over the next two innings to put the game out of reach, with a Lyzette Reveles bases-loaded walk in the 6th accounting for the last of CSUDH's runs on the afternoon.

Franks also entered in relief to pick up the loss, falling to 2-1 on the year.

The two teams go at it again tomorrow, with first pitch of game one set for a 12 noon start.
