Golson's Game-High 24 Not Enough in Loss at East Bay

HAYWARD -- Although mathematically still alive for the eighth and final berth into the California Collegiate Athletic Association postseason tournament, Cal State Dominguez Hills' hopes for its first postseason appearance of any kind since the 2010-11 season took a big hit tonight as Cal State East Bay held on for an 81-76 win over the visiting Toros, despite a game-high 24 point-effort from Vincent Golson.

CSUDH falls to 10-15 overall, and 4-13 in the CCAA with just three games left in the regular season, and trails 8th-place Cal State LA by two full games, which also has just three games left.

The Toros' aggressive nature in the first half sent them to the free throw line 17 times, with 11 makes keeping them in the opening 20-minute stanza as the Pioneers shot 42.4% from the floor en route to a 37-34 lead.

After the break, a pair of Ivan Dooley freebies to open the second-half scoring cut CSUEB's lead to just one at the 19:17 mark at 37-36, only to have the hosts go on a 7-2 run to give them breathing room at 44-28 four minutes later.

That's where the lead would hover over the next 10 minutes until another Golson bucket, this time a 3-pointer, brought CSUDH to within 63-61 at the 4:39 mark.

An old-fashioned 3-point play by Pioneer Alex Carmon, however, pushed East Bay's lead back to five, and after another Golson bucket, six straight East Bay points gave them a 70-63 lead with 2:21 left in regulation.

The Toros would get as close as 72-69 on a Dooley triple with 75 ticks remaining, but East Bay hit 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to seal the win and move them ahead of CSUDH in the standings.

Golsin added four boards and four assists to his statline, while Justin Sadler's 16, Dooley's 13 and Jonathan Nichols' 12 points gave CSUDH four double-figure scorers.

CSUDH will look to keep its CCAA tournament hopes alive tomorrow night at Cal State Monterey Bay after the Otters disposed of Cal State LA earlier this evening.
