Big Flies Give Toros Split of Season Series at San Marcos

SAN MARCOS -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team has shown an early flair for the dramatic thus far in the young season, using a pair of extra-inning home runs to take two of the four games against host and CCAA newcomer Cal State San Marcos, including a continuation game from yesterday's nightcap which was suspended due to darkness.

Lyzette Reveles and Jasmine Ruiz (pictured) provided the big blows in the wins as CSUDH moves to 4-3 overall and 1-1 CCAA.

The Toros got off to a great start in continuing the suspended game from last night, using a Ruiz single, Cougar error and Jazmyne Cortinas walk a batter later to load the bases, setting the table for freshman Reveles, who clubbed a towering shot over the left field wall to clear the bases and give CSUDH a dramatic 9-5 lead.

CSUDH starter Alyssa Valinches, who began this game nearly 22 hours ago, put the finishing touches on the win by retiring the Cougars in order to pick up the win.

Analisa Nicholson and Reveles picked up two hits as well as mutliple runs batted in.

The opening game of today's regularly scheduled twinbill went quickly as neither team was able to get any offense generated for six and a half innings, with CSUSM enjoying a walk-off in the 7th with a double down the left field line.

In the nightcap, however, CSUDH wasted little time to open the scoring as Nicholson folowed a two-out walk drawn by Ruiz by turning on a 2-2 count and sending the offering over the right centerfield wall for a 2-0 lead.

That's where the score remained until the Cougars tied the score in the 4th, only to have Cortinas untie the game with a 2RBI double one inning later.

The Cougars answered right back with a pair in the 5th before Madison Murphy broke the tie with an RBI single in the 6th, with CSUSM again answering in the 7th with a single run to tie the game yet again, with Murphy showing off her arm by throwing out a would-be winning runner who was trying to score from second base.

That momentum carried over to CSUDH's next at-bat as Ruiz followed a Murphy walk and Alexis Viramontes single by hammering an 0-2 pitch over the left field wall for an 8-5 lead, with Murphy's arm again coming into play in the bottom half of the frame as the Cougars looked to tie the game down a double with runners on first and second brought in one runner, only to have Murphy gun down the runner on first trying to make it to third base to end the game.

Victoria Franks picked up the complete-game win to improve to 2-0, with Viramontes and Nicholson tallying a pair of hits and Ruiz, Nicholson and Cortinas all driving in at least two runs.

The Toros open their homestand on Friday, February 19, hosting perennial power UC San Diego in a four-game set.
