Huge Rally in the Ninth Inning Allows Lancers to Sweep Series with Toros

CARSON -- Cal State Dominguez Hills' Luke Laurita took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning but couldn't reach the finish line as Cal Baptist's baseball team scored six runs in the ninth to erase a three-run deficit and take a 7-4 win and sweeping the three-game non-conference series against the Toros Saturday.

Entering the ninth with a 4-1 lead, Laurita got jammed quickly when the Lancers used three straight singles to load the bases. Rigoberto Fernandez (0-1) came in looking to save the game but a fielder's choice followed by a two-run double to right field tied the game.

CBU (5-1) grabbed the lead two batters later when a throwing error to first on a sacrifice bunt sailed over first base and allowed two runs across. A RBI single to right field completed the 7-4 lead.

Laurita was credited a no-decision despite allowing three earned runs on five hits, a walk and two hit batsmen while striking out three.

Although CBU led 1-0 after 3 ½ innings, the Toros (3-4) evened the score in the fourth inning when Brady Conlan, who had returned from Australia after representing the Philippines in the World Baseball Classic qualifiers Thursday and Friday, led off with a single up the middle and scored on Lester Salcedo's single through the right side.

It was almost déjà vu all over again in the sixth inning. Conlan led off with a single and advanced to second on Salcedo's base hit. After Miguel Castaneda moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt, Parker Hokuf delivered a RBI single to center to drive in the go-ahead run.

CSUDH went on to drive in two more in the eighth. With the bases loaded and one out, Jeff Gilstrap took a hit by the pitch to force in the third run and Adrian Guzman hit a RBI single to right to score Castaneda.

The Toros welcome crosstown rival Cal Poly Pomona for a non-conference game Tuesday before actually opening California Collegiate Athletic Association play against Sonoma State. First pitch is at 2 p.m.
