Offense Backs Gatewood, Etchebarren in Toros Win Over No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona

CARSON -- It may not go towards the California Collegiate Athletic Association record, but the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team got a confidence booster going into the start of the conference season by racking up a season-high 16 hits, four of which were for extra bases, in the Toros 10-2 upset over crosstown rival No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona Tuesday afternoon.

The Toros (4-4) go into the league opener against Sonoma State next weekend snapping a four-game losing skid.

While looking for an offensive spark against Cal Baptist last weekend, Brady Conlan delivered that with two big hits in his five plate appearances. With no wind at all, the third baseman smashed a pitch to left field for a two-out solo homer in the third to take a 2-0 lead. His other clutch performance came in the fifth inning with runners on first and second, when he hit a single to the warning track in left center to break a 2-2 tie. Conlan finished the day with three RBI.

Meanwhile, TyRay Gatewood (1-1) had an outstanding 6-inning gem on the mound, allowing two runs, one earned, in the fifth inning that tied the game. He went on to strike out three and concede five hits and a walk before turning it over to Ethan Etchebarren in the seventh. The left-hander pitched a one-hit, four-strikeout performance to earn the Toros first save of the season.

The Broncos (6-3) were limited to two doubles out of their six hits. The top four batters in the order were also held in check as they recorded two hits. Cal Poly Pomona starter Tyler Rowe lasted 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk.

Although Cal Poly Pomona tied the game in the fifth, CSUDH responded to more than just the big hit by Conlan that drove in the eventual winning run. Johnny Palmer hit a comebacker to the pitcher Peter Beattie (2-1) but a wild throw to first in the putout attempt skipped by first baseman Nic Hernandez that allowed Parker Hokuf to score from second.

The game was put out of Cal Poly Pomona's reach in the sixth when Lester Salcedo hit a RBI double down the left field line and Miguel Castaneda followed with a two-out, two-run single to right.
