CCAA Newcomer San Marcos Wins First-Ever League Contest at Expense of Toros

SAN MARCOS -- New California Collegiate Athletic Association member Cal State San Marcos picked up its first-ever softball league win this afternoon after taking a 3-2 decision over Cal State Dominguez Hills this afternoon at the CSUSM Softball Field, before darkness suspended the nightcap with the teams tied at 5-5 after 8.0 innings of play.

The Toros managed just four hits in falling to 3-3, 0-1 CCAA, with Madison Murphy the lone Toro with a hit and RBI in the opener, before the All-CCAA selection went 2-for-4 so far with a solo home run in game two.

In game one, San Marcos got on the board first on a pair of hits in the 2nd inning, before CSUDH took the lead half an inning later.

In the top of the 3rd, Lyzette Reveles began the frame with a leadoff single, and moved to second after Ivy Campbell was plunked.  After a sacrifice bunt, Murphy made the most of her opportunity with runners in scoring position, hammering a single through the right side to bring home Reveles to tie the game and move Campbell to third.

After another hit batter, Jasmine Ruiz brought home Campbell with a sacrifice fly to give CSUDH the lead.

That edge, however, lasted just one inning as the Cougars answered with a pair in the bottom of the 4th on three hits and a Toro miscue, and had a chance to break the game open by loading the bases.  CSUDH starter Jamie Duran, however, worked her way out of the jam by inducing a sharp grounder to third base, which Jazmyne Cortinas blocked, picked up and fired to first for the out.

CSUDH did little to threaten in the final three innings as San Marcos starter Amanda Horbasch faced just 11 batters to make history for the Cougars.

The number five didn't go the Toros' way in the nightcap through 8.0 innings as the visitors were unable to hold onto a 5-3 lead after plating a run in the top of the 7th inning, despite five errors by San Marcos.

Additionally, Toro number 5 in Ivy Campbell was hit by a pitch to lead off the 8th inning, and was stranded at first base.

Murphy began the game by being hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an Analisa Nicholson rope down the right field line.

Murphy led off the 3rd inning and doubled CSUDH's lead, jumping on a San Marcos offering and pulling it over the right field fence.  Alexis Viramontes followed that by pulling a double down the left field line before Nicholson again capitalized with a liner up the middle to give the Toros a 3-0 lead.

CSUDH scored single runs in the 6th and 7th on Cougar miscues, but the hosts made up for those mistakes with two runs in both those innings to knot the game at 5-5.

CSUSM threatened in the 8th after earning a leadoff walk and a base hit one batter later, but Toro starter Alyssa Valinches settled down and fanned the final two batters of the frame to send the contest into the 9th inning.

One inning later, freshman Lyzette Reveles ended the contest with a grand slam to give CSUDH a split.
