Warriors Get Final Momentum to Defeat Toros in CCAA Opener

CARSON – Simone Thompson scored 10 points, Imari Brown grabbed 11 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team opened their CCAA regular-season title defense with a 66-53 defeat to visiting Stanislaus State Friday night.

The Toros (3-5, 0-1 CCAA) opened up with a 7-1 lead from the start but the Warriors (3-6, 1-0 CCAA) went on score 10 consecutive points to take the lead and never look back.

Jocelyne Diaz and Destinee Williams both finished with eight points while Brown and Yasmine Tweedy each contributed to seven. In addition, Brown dished out five assists and had the Toros only two blocks.

The Toros ended the night shooting 31 percent from the field and going 14-17 from the free throw line.

It was all the starters for the Warriors as three of them reached double-figures. Reana Hardin had 17 points to lead the team. Stanislaus State compiled a 42-shooting percentage.

Stanislaus State led by as many as 18 midway through the third quarter. The Toros got as close as a seven-point deficit with three minutes to go but the Warriors took advantage of the free throw line by making 8-of-9.

Before resuming conference play at UC San Diego, the Toros will make a trip to the Central Valley to play an exhibition game with NCAA Division I Fresno State Wednesday. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
