Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Uses Home Opener to Avenge Loss to Stanislaus State

CARSON – The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team got its revenge against Stanislaus State Friday.

Nearly two weeks after the Warriors pummeled the Toros 64-45 in Turlock to open a three-game season matchup, the Cardinal and Gold returned the favor in their home opener by starting off an early run to complete a 57-42 win in both teams' CCAA opener. The two will have the rubber match at Stanislaus State January 13.

But the Toros now take their three-game win streak to the Bay Area for a non-conference matchup at Dominican on a rare Sunday at 2 p.m.

Starters Vincent Golson, Justin Sadler and Mikey Hatfield combined for 41 points. Golson led the way with 15 points, Sadler had 14 to go along with his 11 rebounds and Hatfield hit all four of his shots from 3-point range to collect a dozen.

The Toros (4-2, 1-0 CCAA) shot 35 percent from the field but had a 43-32 advantage on the glass.

Turnovers and steals were another factor in the Toros win Friday. The Toros took away 12 of the 16 total Warrior turnovers.

But all in all, head coach Steve Becker was pleased with the overall performance, including the energy from the bench.

"I'm really proud of how hard we competed and the attention to detail we showed on the defensive end of the floor tonight," Becker said. "We struggled to make shots in the second half but our defense allowed to maintain a lead. I was particularly pleased with our bench tonight; we were engaged and excited for one another for 40 minutes. We need to build on this and prepare for a good Dominican team Sunday."

After shooting nearly 43 percent from the field on their home floor, the Warriors didn't bottle it up as they finished tonight shooting 34.1 percent. Vondel Faniel finished with the same amount of points (13) he made in the last meeting to lead the Warriors. He also reached for eight rebounds to lead that column.

The Toros never trailed at any point of the game. They started out on a 12-0 run and the Warriors didn't get their first bucket until the 12:11 mark.

The Warriors got to within a seven-point deficit with eight minutes remaining in the first half but the Toros responded with a 16-5 run to triple the lead.

CSUDH went into the locker room having a 32-11 lead.
