Cal State LA Rallies in Final Minute to Sneak by Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES – The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team came within one second short from clinching their first CCAA win of the season over Cal State LA Friday night.

The celebration was spoiled by the Golden Eagles as they used a miraculous run to erase an eight-point deficit within the final minute, highlighted by a pair of free throws with 0.7 seconds to beat the Cardinal and Gold 90-89 in the Eagles Nest.

After Yasmine Tweedy hit one of her two free throws to break the 88-point tie, the Toros had less than 15 seconds to kill for the win. CSULA's Christine Delapina attempted to go for the game-winning 3-pointer but was fouled in the process. She missed her first try but made the next two that became the difference in the game.

Imari Brown compiled a season-high 29 points and was just five shy from her career-high against the very same Golden Eagle program last year. In fact, 21 of her points tonight came in the second half.

Simone Thompson finished with 16 points but had five steals and rebounds each, Kayla Gillett finished the day with 11 points and Delaura Castanada rounded out the Toros with 10.

The Toros shot 46.6 percent from the field but free throws proved beneficiary as they made 26 of 39.

Although the Golden Eagles (6-5, 3-0 CCAA) showed to have the size, they had edged the Toros in rebounding 44-41.

Three Golden Eagles had played from start to finish. Da'Jah Jackson led all Golden Eagles with 25 points along with handing out six assists.

CSUDH had led by as many as 16 at the start of the third quarter.

Before the holiday break, CSUDH will head south play at UC San Diego on a rare Monday at 2 p.m. The Tritons are coming off having silenced Cal State San Bernardino 82-48.
