Gillett Drops Career-High 25 Points in Women's Basketball's Loss to UC San Diego

LA JOLLA – Kayla Gillett seemed to love the bright lights at RIMAC Arena as the Cal State Dominguez Hills freshman dropped a career and game-high 25 points in the women's basketball team's 82-64 loss to UC San Diego Monday.

After shooting 23.5 percent in the first half, the Toros (3-7, 0-3 CCAA) improved that in the second and ended the day with 32.4 percent. DeLaura Castanada contributed to 11 points off the bench, all in the second half. Dijour Ledbetter and Destinee Williams each scored seven points with Williams grabbing a career-high 12 rebounds.

Gillett, meanwhile, bested the 21 points she scored at BYU-Hawai`i.

Cassie Macleod led the effort for all Tritons (7-3, 3-1 CCAA) with 21 points. Three others also reached double figures led by Paige Song's 14 points off the bench.

The Tritons finished the day shooting 45 percent from the field including 10 3-pointers.

Although UCSD got the first bucket, the Toros went on to score the next 10 points for their largest lead. The lead was completely erased when Song hit a 3-pointer at the 6:39 mark to tie it up at 17 apiece. The Tritons would go on to build a 31-20 lead at the half.

Neither player had reached double figures in any category. Gillett led both sides with nine points, Williams grabbed the same amount in the rebounding department.

Depth proved be the difference in the first half as the Triton bench scored 16 points. The Toros got three from a Ledbetter free throw and a Lisa Rhett jumper.

The Tritons had led by as many as 23 near the end of the third quarter. CSUDH would bring that deficit down to nine with 3:14 remaining. Castanada hit a pair of free throws to cut the Tritons lead to 65-56.

UCSD, however, capitalized on free throws the remainder of the game to lock up the win.

Following Christmas break, the Toros wrap up the brief three-game road trip at Cal State San Marcos December 28. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
