LOS ANGELES — Bridget Heins and Morelia Castro each had 15 kills, Cathryn Lopez saved 27 balls as the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team halted a Cal State L.A. rally to leave the Eagles Nest with a five-set win (25-22, 25-18, 19-25, 18-25, 15-12) Friday night.
The Toros (9-14, 6-9 CCAA) complete the road schedule and will complete the regular-season at the Torodome starting with Chico State Friday at 7 p.m.
Hailey Smith was not to far behind Heins and Castro as she earned 13 kills. Vanessa Phyakeo rounded out the Toros in double figures with 11.
Antonette Rolda handed out 27 assists while Rylee Kiger contributed to 21.
The Toros took command of the first set by winning 8-of-9 rallies to take a 14-8 lead. The Golden Eagles though responded back using an 8-0 run to take a 19-17 lead. CSUDH trailed by as many as one the next several serves but got the 4-point momentum to win the game.
CSULA would lead by as many as three to start the second set but the Toros, at one point, won 7-of-8 battles to take a 12-9 lead and never looked back.
The Golden Eagles jumped right out of the gate following intermission, going 7-1. The Toros got to within three at one point during the game. CSULA's momentum carried into the fourth set as it led the entire round.
The deciding set saw the Toros pick up the momentum briefly after winning 6-of-8 to take a 7-4 lead. Both teams exchanged serving opportunities throughout the game as no team won more than two rallies.
