Toros Fall to Newly-Crowned North Division Champion Wildcats in Five Sets

CARSON – Rylee Kiger dished out 22 assists and 12 digs for a double-double but the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team dropped a five-set decision (19-25, 25-23, 25-17, 15-25, 11-15) to the now-crowned CCAA North Division champions Chico State Friday night.

The result of tonight's match, along with Sonoma State's loss to Cal State San Bernardino, assures that the Toros (9-15, 6-10 CCAA) and Wildcats (20-6, 14-3 CCAA) will meet again in the first round of the CCAA Tournament beginning Thursday. CSUDH closes the regular-season Saturday against Stanislaus State at 7 p.m. Prior to first serve, the Toros will honor seniors Vanessa Phyakeo and Natalie Lopez.

Hailey Smith led the effort on the attack with 17 kills and came up a dig short from a double-double. Antonette Rolda set up for 23 kills, Bridget Heins had 10 kills and five total blocks, including one solo credit.

Although the Wildcats never trailed in the first set, no team led by more than two in the second round.

The Toros took control of the third set by winning 4-of-5 rallies to take a 13-11 lead. CSUDH had never trialed from that point on and won four straight to clinch the third game.

Chico State dropped the first serve to start the fourth set but went on to win seven straight to take a 7-1 lead.

CSUDH jumped up front, 4-2, to start the deciding set but Chico State took control thanks to a 6-1 run.
