CARSON – The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team had run into foul trouble throughout the game and Point Loma took advantage of it in the Toros 81-70 loss Saturday in the non-conference finale.
Although both teams shared near identical numbers in field goals and 3-pointers made, it was the charity points that benefited the Sea Lions to the win, making 31-of-46 free throws. The Toros committed 33 personal fouls throughout the contest.
The senior tandem of
Imari Brown and
Simone Thompson led the effort for the Toros. Brown finished with 20 points while Thompson hit four of her six field goals from beyond the arc for 14.
Yasmine Tweedy added a dozen and
Destinee Williams tallied 11 for the Cardinal and Gold.
Alex Brunk and Kassidy Gegenbacher produced nearly half of the Sea Lions total points, combining for 39 points with 10 each coming from the free throw line.
After Williams dropped the first bucket of the game 20 seconds in, the Sea Lions went on a 10-0 run to take control of the lead throughout the contest. PLNU had led by no more than 15 points in the contest.
CSUDH got to within five points on several occasions. Its last was near halftime, 39-34 following a pair of free throws by
Dijour Ledbetter.
With the non-conference schedule complete, except for an exhibition game, CSUDH will now turn its attention to the CCAA regular-season title defense starting with Stanislaus State at the Torodome Friday at 5:30 p.m.
