Brown Denies Game-Tying Shot Attempt to Give Women's Basketball Third Straight Win

LAIE, Hawai`i — Imari Brown scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds but her lone block Saturday night was a key factor to the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team's 83-80 win over Hawai`i Pacific.

Trailing by a deuce with 4.8 seconds left, HPU's Spencer Gray went for the win by attempting a 3-pointer only for Brown to block it and draw a foul while rebounding it.

After the Sharks made a pair of free throws to bring the deficit back to one, Delaura Castanada got the lead back to three after her charity points were made.

The win gives CSUDH a three-game sweep over the PacWest Conference's Hawaii schools. The Toros bump their record to 3-2, all against the PacWest, with two more of their members coming to the Torodome for the home opener. The Toros open the classic hosting Cal Baptist at 1 p.m. followed by Cal State LA taking on Point Loma. Crosstown rivals Cal State LA will join the Toros in the PacWest/CCAA Challenge to play the second game of the twinbills.

Dijour Ledbetter had a big night off the bench, dropping 11 points and going to the glass 11 times. Kayla Gillett made five 3-pointers and went a perfect 4-for-4 on the line to finish with 19 points. She also reached for six rebounds and dished out five assists. Castanada had six points but earned five boards and assists each.

The Toros ended the night shooting 43 percent from the field and outrebounding the Sharks 44-36.

Armed with a deep bench, the Sharks shot 44 percent with Breanna Mackenzie scoring a team-best 23 points.

The Toros started to run away with the lead in the second quarter when the combination of Lisa Kayla Gillett, Jocelyn Diaz, Dijour Ledbetter and Lisa Rhett contributed to 10 points and establish a 32-22 lead at the 6:37 mark.

The tide turned over to the Sharks as they scored 10 points to tie the game at 32. Both teams exchanged baskets and went into intermission tied at 36.

CSUDH never trailed in the second half but the Sharks have cut the deficit to one more than once.
