Wildcats Halt No. 20 Toros Rally Attempt in Second Half

CHICO – The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team's attempt to rebound from a two-goal deficit came up short as Chico State got an insurance goal and held on to upset the 20th-ranked Toros 3-1 on a hot Sunday afternoon.

The Toros drop to 7-4-1 overall, 4-2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. CSUDH has also suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time in nearly two years.

It took only 38 seconds for the Wildcats (4-5-3, 3-3-2 CCAA) to strike a goal. Carter Johnson delivered a cross into the box where it found the foot of Garrett Hogbin, who blasted it from the penalty kick marker for his first collegiate goal.

Chico State's second goal came 10 minutes later and in similar fashion to the first one, Rajaee DeLane blasted a shot from the penalty mark to the upper right corner.

CSUDH went into the break trailing 2-0 and had to play with 10 men since the 25th minute due to a red card.

The shorthanded Toros cut the lead in half in the 57th minute when Leonardo Nogueira, from the top of the box, curved a free kick around a Wildcat wall and into the right side of the goal.

CSUDH was near to tying the match in the 64th minute. Israel Murguia sent a free kick from midfield into the box where Angel Ayala's header was touched by a Chico State defender and hit the right post. A second shot was made near the goal line but was stopped by keeper Luke Dennison.

Chico State got another insurance policy in the 73rd minute when a breakaway from midfield allowed Frankie Palmer to send a shot from the right side into teh goal.

Despite being down a man, the Toros had outshot the Wildcats 14-9 overall. Chico State edged the Toros in shots on goal 6-5. Chase Gentry and Benito Gonzalez shared goalkeeper duties each half. Gonzalez had three saves.

The road trip continues for CSUDH as it now travels south of the state starting with Cal State San Marcos Friday at 3 p.m.
