Defense Holds Off Cal State San Marcos' Final Push to Get Back on Winning Track

SAN MARCOS -- Carlos Torres scored his first goal of the year midway through the second half and the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team's defense protected the lead within the final minutes to complete a 1-0 win over a reeling Cal State San Marcos Friday evening.

The Toros snap a two-match losing skid to improve to 8-4-1 overall and 5-2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. As the battle for a spot to the six-team CCAA Championship begins intensify, the Toros have now moved into a tie for fourth in the standings with 15 points, pending on the result of UC San Diego and Cal State LA later tonight. The Tritons, who the Toros will meet Sunday at 2 p.m., have 13 points.

CSUDH has five matches remaining in the regular-season, including the two final home matches next weekend.

The match's only goal arrived in the 63rd minute. As the ball was cleared out of the Cougars box, Carlos Torres sent it back in from 30 yards only it found the back of the net.

CSUSM never back down as it went aggressive on the attack within the final two minutes, even sending goalkeeper Justin Tesar to the Toros side.

Although the Toros got the win, the Cougars (4-4-2, 3-2-2 CCAA) had the upper hand offensively on paper. CSUSM outshot CSUDH 13-7 overall but each team had three fired directly at the goal.

Both teams had equal chances on the corner kick.

Chase Gentry, who made three saves on the afternoon, earned his third shutout of the season.
