Otters Complete Comeback Over Toros on Dig 4 A Cure Night

CARSON -- Visiting Cal State Monterey Bay walked into tonight's CCAA out-of-region match-up donned in CCAA-issued "Dig 4 A Cure" shirts, but that was the extent of its cooperation as the Otters stormed back from a two-sets-to-one deficit to stun Cal State Dominguez Hills tonight in a key league contest.

Hailey Smith led the Toros with 14 kills, but 10 attack errors in the final two sets for the hosts proved too difficult to ovecome in the 28-30, 25-23, 25-14, 23-25, 15-10 decision, dropping the Toros to 6-10, 3-5 CCAA.

Even on paper coming into the match, the two teams lived up to their billing in the opener, tying six times over the first 12 points before a Claire Autry service ace and two errors by MB gave the Toros a 9-6 lead.

Monterey Bay caught the hosts at 13-all, but faced set point at 28-27 after another attack error, only to regroup and a two kills that bookended a Toro attack error in the 30-28 opening set decision.

The teams again matched up in the second, splitting the set's first 32 points en route to a 16-16 tie.  Kylie Osgood, however, utilized her serve to give the Toros the next three points as the Toros withstood a late comeback attempt to knot the match at one set all, using a pair of errors for the 25-23 win.

After the break, the Toros caught fire, turning a 4-2 lead into a 13-5 cushion behind Cathryn Lopez's serve, and to 24-12 behind Osgood's rotation at the line before Smith sealed the win with a thunderous hammer on the left side.

CSUDH looked to put the match away in the fourth, maintaining a 2-point lead late in the frame, the last coming at 20-18.  The Otters, however, scored the next two points to swing momentum their way, finalizing their comeback by scoring the final two points of the set to even the match at two sets each.

CSUMB took a 6-2 lead in the fifth, before Osgood's serve brought the Toros all the way back to the tune of an 8-6 lead.  The Otters, however, went on a 9-2 run to close the match as three Toro attack errors and wayward passing down the stretch sealed CSUDH's fate.

Autry added 13 kills and Morelia Castro nine, while Lopez added 22 digs and three service aces, along with numerous hustle plays that failed to show up in the statilne.

CSUDH continues its homestand for a rare midweek contest, welcoming Cal State San Marcos for a key South Division contest.  First serve is set for 7 pm in the Torodome.
