Lucas Ties Block Assist Record in Toros Four-Set Win Over Cal State San Marcos

CARSON -- Sophomore Cecelia Lucas made nine block assists to match the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team's single-match record and the Toros claimed a four-set victory (35-33, 20-25, 25-20, 25-15) over Cal State San Marcos at the Torodome Wednesday night.

The Toros, winner of two of the last three contests, move to 7-10 overall and 4-5 in the CCAA.

Lucas' nine block assists matches the record Keesha Aldridge has done on three different occasions between 2003-04. She also had five kills on the evening.

Claire Autry led the effort on the attack with 15 kills followed by Hailey Smith and Bridget Heins with 10 each. Antonette Rolda was credited for 29 assists and was three digs shy from a double-double.

Cathryn Lopez and Rylee Kiger each had 16 digs while Vanessa Phyakeo had 14.

Although the Toros had to fight in extras to claim the first set, 35-33, the Cougars (11-6, 4-4 CCAA) came up with a major run midway through the second game to win it 25-20.

CSUDH jumped out of intermission with a 4-0 only to lose it back to the Cougars. Both teams battled back-and-forth for the lead until a 3-point run by the Cardinal and Gold gave them the lead for good.

The Toros established a 4-point momentum midway through the fourth set to take a 14-7 lead and then they claimed six consecutive points to win the set and the match.

The homestand continues Friday when crosstown rival Cal State LA visits the Torodome on Alumni Night. First serve is at 6 p.m.
