Toros Cruise to 3-0 Sweep Over East Bay Behind Team Effort

CARSON -- Sophomore middle blocker Cecelia Lucas led all hitters with 10 kills as Cal State Dominguez Hills coasted to a 3-0 sweep over visiting Cal State East Bay in a Friday night league tilt.

The Toros improve to 6-9 overall and 3-4 in CCAA play, with Cal State Monterey Bay visiting Carson tomorrow on "Dig 4 A Cure" night after the Otters were swept by Cal State LA earlier tonight.

CSUDH hit .214 for the match while just making 14 attack errors overall, with its tall and athletic middles limiting the Pioneers to a .073 percentage, and helping force them into 18 attack errors.

The win also gives the Toros a two-match win streak over the visitors after CSUEB enjoyed its own three-match win streak during the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

Set one saw the Toros earn 10 kills with just four errors, serving four aces to East Bay's one, and blocking four balls compared to just two for the Pios.

After the visitors scored the match's first point, it was all CSUDH thanks to a kill by Bridget Heins and three more points off the serve of Claire Autry.

A Morelia Castro kill put the Toros up 8-2, with a Hailey Smith putaway giving the hosts a commanding 22-10 lead en route to the first set win.

Lucas set the Toros off on the right foot in set two with a hammer as the first of three-straight points as CSUDH doubled the score on its opponent, 8-4.

The lead reached seven six times down the stretch, the last at 21-14, before CSUEB closed its gap to 21-19.  Heins, however, put down a Rylee Kiger set while Antonette Rolda followed with an ace to give CSUDH breathing room, with Rolda dishing Lucas to close out the frame, 25-20.

After intermission, Rolda took matters into her own hands, serving six straight points to continue draping momentum in Cardinal and Gold.

An ensuing service error did nothing to derail the Toro train as the hosts again built a 14-7 lead on a Pioneer service error.

Up 15-9, CSUDH scored 7 of the next 9 points to push its cushion to 22-11, eventually closing out the set and match on a Malerie Crenshaw kill for the sweep.

Autry added 7 kills and Castro 6 with Rolda and Kiger combining for 29 assists.  Kylie Osgood paced the defense with 13 digs while Kiger (3), Osgood (2), Rolda (2) and Autry (2) contributed in the service ace department.

Tomorrow's match against the Otters will begin at 5:00 pm, and fans are encouraged to wear pink to support cancer awareness.  Donations will be taken for CSUDH Thinks Pink t-shirts, with those donating eligible to win a pink volleyball autographed by the Toro volleyball team.
