Volleyball Bounces Back From First Set Loss to Defeat Jacks

ARCATA – Claire Autry had 15 kills, just one shy from matching her career-high, Hailey Smith had a double-double of 10 kills and 15 digs as the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team recovered from a first set defeat by winning the next three to win 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-19) over host Humboldt State Thursday evening.

The Toros improve to 7-14 overall and 5-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with three matches remaining, including the road finale at crosstown rival Cal State LA November 4. The win still keeps pace with UC San Diego and Cal State San Marcos for third and fourth place in the South Division.

Autry also finished the night with four block assists and three digs. Morelia Castro came up a kill short from joining the century club. Rylee Kiger and Antonette Rolda combined for 46 assists and Cathryn Lopez saved 19 balls to pace the Toros.

CSUDH had a 22-19 lead in the first set only to lose it to the Jacks (10-11, 5-8) on a 7-0 run.

The second set saw the Toros create a 5-1 momentum to take a 17-13 lead. The Jacks got to within one point but the Cardinal and Gold held on to even the match at one apiece into intermission.

The Toros jumped to a 7-1 lead at the start of the third set and never looked back en route to a 25-18 win.

Humboldt State copied off CSUDH's third set and took a 7-2 lead. The Toros cut the deficit to within two. After tying the game at 14, the Toros went on to win 10 of the next 11 services to take a 23-15 lead.

Nicole Bewley led the effort for the Jacks with a match-high 17 kills. Sarah Shively made 20 digs to lead that column.
