No. 21 Broncos Spoil Senior Day by Edging Men's Soccer

CARSON – Emmanuel Corona cut the deficit in half midway through the second half but the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team couldn't find the equalizer in a 2-1 loss to Cal Poly Pomona on Senior Day Sunday.

The loss doesn't hurt the Toros (9-6-1, 6-4-0) hunt in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship race, but a Cal State LA win over Cal State San Bernardino down the freeway later in the day did drop the Toros to the six and final spot in the standings. The Toros and Golden Eagles are knotted up with 18 points but CSULA owns the tiebreaker over CSUDH based on the win in Los Angeles earlier in the month.

Only two matches remain in the regular-season. Both are on the road starting with fourth-place Sonoma State Thursday at 2 p.m.

In what was a physical matchup on both sides of the field, the Broncos (11-3-2, 7-2-1) got on the board first capitalizing on a Toro mistake. Luis Najera Jr., the hero in CPP's 1-0 win at CSULA Friday, received a pass from Sergi Monso and easily beat keeper Benito Gonzalez in the 29th minute.

The eventual match-winner came in the 52nd minute. Monso dribbled from midfield and this shot from the top of the box hit the back of the net to put the Broncos ahead 2-0.

CSUDH's only goal was in the 79th minute. Bruno Montini delivered a perfect cross that found the head of Corona. The ball ricocheted off the crossbar and bounced on the line for the referee to signal goal.

Neither team couldn't find a shot the rest of the match.

CSUDH had edged CPP in shots 15-12 and both sides had six corner kick chances. Gonzalez made five saves while on the other side Jason Trejos had four.
