Toros Drop Second-Straight Five-Setter as CPP Earns First League Win

POMONA -- Five-set matches again proved unkind to the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team after the Toros dropped their fourth marathon in five tries, this time at Cal Poly Pomona to give the Broncos their first CCAA win of the year.

Claire Autry's 13 kills and Morelia Castro's 12 led the Cardinal and Gold, but three sets hitting under .050 were too much to overcome.

Tonight's match was the third five-setter in the past five matches, with the Toros dropping all three.

Antonette Rolda got the Toros off to a hot start, serving the visitors to a 4-0 lead in the opener before Autry's serve brought CSUDH to a 13-6 lead.

A Bridget Heins kill pushed the lead to 18-11, with a Vanessa Phykaeo putaway on the 6th set point gave the Toros the set one win.

A gutty Bronco team picked up wins in the next two sets, and looked to put the Toros away in the fourth after taking leads of 9-3 and 11-4 early.

CSUDH, however, cut its deficit to 13-12 on a Cathryn Lopez service ace, taking the lead at 19-18 on successive Castro hammers.

After the squads tied at 20-20, CSUDH went on a 5-3 run to even the match, with a Phyakeo kill and serve accounting for the final two points.

In the fifth, the Broncos scored the set's first six points to take control early, upping their lead to 13-5 late in the match.

Behind a pair of CPP attack errors and kills by Autry and Crenshaw, the Toros showed life at 14-9, but a service error on match point gave the Broncos the set and match.

Phyakeo added six kills and Crenshaw five, with Crenshaw adding eight blocks in the loss.

CSUDH's roadtrip doesn't get any easier as it takes on CCAA South leader and winners of five-straight in No. 18 CS San Bernardino tomorrow night at 7 pm.
