Men's Soccer Beats Up Coyotes at StubHub Center to Keep Pace in Postseason Race

CARSON -- Looking to recover from what was a difficult road trip, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team turned to the friendly StubHub Center to get themselves back on track as the Toros blew out Cal State San Bernardino 7-2 on a hot Friday evening.

Joey Chica broke his three-match silence by scoring twice along with being credited for three assists. Senior captain and defender Bryan Haley found the back of the net for the first time in his career on the final home weekend of the regular season. Angel Ayala's third goal of the season in the 38th minute proved be the difference in the match while Daniel Nwaogwugwu, Oscar Sanchez and Charlie Gonzales each scored their first goals as a Toro (9-5-1, 6-3-0 CCAA).

The Toros have now won all six of their appearances inside the home of the LA Galaxy. But more importantly, it kept the Toros on pace with other contenders in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship hunt with three matches remaining.

At the end of the night, the Toros leaped over the Coyotes for fifth place in the CCAA standings with 18 points. It will be a battle for fourth place Sunday when Cal Poly Pomona visits Toro Stadium Sunday at 11:30 a.m. The Broncos pulled off an upset 1-0 road victory over Cal State LA that keeps the Golden Eagles on the outside looking in.

All six spots are still up for grabs as first-place UC San Diego has 22 points and Sonoma State and Chico State both have 20.

Chica, the CCAA's leading scorer with 12 goals and 31 points, got the Toros scoring started 16 minutes into the match. Nwaogwugwu connected to Chica uncovered inside the box where he easily beat keeper Jacob Huber.

In the 23rd minute, Chica took a corner kick from the right side that was perfectly placed at far post for the 6-2 defender to head it in.

The winning goal in the 38th minute started D'morea Alewine finding Chica at the top of the box. He passed it to Ayala who was more toward the middle of the goal where he set up a two-touch shot that beat Huber.

The Coyotes (7-4-1, 5-3-1 CCAA) got their goals in the 54th and 87th minutes. The second one was on a penalty kick.

Despite being dominated by the scoreboard, CSUSB won the shooting category 20-15.

Benito Gonzalez had made seven saves on the day while Huber stopped two.
