Chica Nets Hat Trick in Toros Win Over Cal State Monterey Bay

CARSON – Joey Chica recorded his first career hat trick and added an assist to the match winner as the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team rolled to a 4-0 CCAA win over Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday afternoon.

The Toros (7-2-1) continue to add on to its strong start in CCAA play, improving to 4-0-0. They will be tested now away from campus with a four-match road trip starting with a rematch with Cal State LA Wednesday. The Golden Eagles stomped on the Toros 3-0 in non-conference play October 5.

It is also the first time in nearly a month the Toros have competed away from CSUDH.

The Toros also posted back-to-back shutout victories since last season. It is their third this year.

Emmanuel Corona got the Toros on the board 3:10 into the contest when he headed the ball in off a perfect cross from Angel Ayala after he and Chica had played keep away from the Otters near the left side of the box.

Chica's first goal came in the 35th minute. Bruno Montini made a pass to him inside the box and after getting better control, he slotted the ball past goalkeeper Jakob Hansen.

After leading 2-0, the Otters had a chance to cut the deficit in half in the 53rd minute, when a foul in the box not only sent Corona away with a red card but a penalty kick as well. Chase Gentry did get his right hand on the shot that sent the ball over the crossbar for the save.

The playing field became even after Hansen was ejected and it proved to be costly as it enabled Chica to score his second goal on the day off a penalty kick.

The hat trick became complete in the 90th minute. Leonardo Nogueira fed a pass to Chica who broke away from midfield. His first shot hit the left post but was able to get the rebound and knock in his CCAA-leading 10th goal of the season.

Gentry had to make five saves on the day, including the penalty kick. Hansen made four saves before his ejection. Tab Hines went the rest of the way not making a save.

CSUDH dominated the shooting category, 18-9 overall, 9-5 on goal.

The Toros and Golden Eagles square off at CSULA's Jesse Owens Track following the women's match at 7 p.m.
