Lopez Moves Into Toro Record Book in 5-Set Loss to Tritons

CARSON -- Sophomore libero Cathryn Lopez saved a career-high 31 balls to put her into a tie for 3rd place in the Cal State Dominguez Hills record book for digs in a single match during the rally scoring era, but visiting UC San Diego used an 8-0 run in the deciding set to quell a would-be Toro comeback in a thrilling 5-set win for the visitors.

Despite the loss, the Toros remain half a game behind Cal State San Marcos for the fourth and final South Division berth in the CCAA postseason tournament race.

Lopez tied a mark for digs set by Jenise Espindola in October of 2007, with the pair chasing Korryne Kelley's record of 36  set on September 1, 2012, and Hilary Hougardy's 35 digs on November 13, 2009.

After the Tritons hit .222 and limited the hosts to a .079 percentage to take the opening set, the Toros turned the tables in set two to even the match, led by Lopez's strong serve and an ace for a 4-0 lead.

The lead grew to six points early until the Tritons took a 13-12 lead, holding a one-point edge at 17-16 late.  Two UCSD attack errors gave back the lead to the Toros the lead, and kills from Morgan Soto and Cecelia Lucas kept the hosts in front.

Holding set point at 24-22, Morelia Castro finished off the visitors to even the match at 1-1.

UCSD regrouped after intermission, hitting .480 with just two errors to take a 2-1 lead, and looked to put the match away after taking a 19-17 late.  The Toros, however, scored three straight on three successive Triton errors, only to have the visitors catch the Toros at 23 apiece to force a time out by the hosts.

That hiatus proved fortuitous as another UCSD error and hammer by Claire Autry closed the set, forcing a fifth.

The Toros stormed to an 8-5 lead in the fifth, but the side change proved their downfall as the Tritons scored the next eight points to take a commanding 13-8 lead.

A Triton service error gave the Toros hope, but a CSUDH attack error gave the visitors a 14-9 lead and four match points.  Two kills by Hailey Smith surrounding a UCSD miscue brought the Toros to within 14-12, but a UCSD time out calmed the Tritons, setting up a final kill by Morgan Kissick to end the marathon.

Castro led the Toros with 14 kills, while Smith added 11 and Autry 10 in the loss.  A huge boost for the Toros came at the service line to the tune of a 9 to 6 edge for the hosts, as well as at the net as CSUDH outblocked the big Triton squad 12 to 11.

CSUDH will look to get back on the winning track, traveling to Cal Poly Pomona on Friday night.
