Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Toros Offense Stymied in Loss to No. 21 UC San Diego

LA JOLLA – The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team couldn't rebound from a one-goal deficit at halftime and No. 21 UC San Diego added two more in the second period to defeat the Toros 3-0 on a windy, overcast Sunday afternoon.

Despite the loss, the Toros (8-5-1, 5-3-0 CCAA) are still holding on to the final spot to the six-team CCAA Championship with 15 points.

Three of the four upcoming opponents remaining in the Toro schedule are contenders, including Cal State San Bernardino, which CSUDH hosts at the StubHub Center Friday at 4:30 p.m. Other contenders remaining in the schedule are Cal Poly Pomona on Senior Day Sunday and Sonoma State on the road next week.

The Tritons (11-1-2, 6-1-1 CCAA), who took sole possession of first place in the standings with the win, scored the eventual match winner in the 27th minute. Nick Palano crossed it to the left side where Christian Cordell knocked it in.

The second goal came five minutes into the second half. Sam Palano took the first shot that was brilliantly saved by a diving Chase Gentry but Zachary Lagotta was there for the rebound to put the Tritons ahead, 2-0.

UCSD completed the 3-0 lead in the 83rd minute after Palano broke away from midfield and beat Gentry 1-on-1.

The Toros edged the Tritons in shots 16-15, with Joey Chica taking five of them.

Gentry finished with six saves on the afternoon.
