Volleyball's Rally Comes Up Short; Falls to Golden Eagles in Four Sets

CARSON -- Claire Autry and Morelia Castro each had a dozen kills, Cathryn Lopez made 14 digs but it wasn't enough as the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team dropped a four-set decision (18-25, 25-22, 13-25, 25-20) to their crosstown rival Cal State LA on Alumni Night Friday.

The Toros fall to 7-11 overall and 4-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Antonette Rolda came up short from another double-double for the second consecutive match, recording 18 assists and seven digs. Rylee Kiger led the effort in the assists department by dishing out 22.

Alma Serna paced the Golden Eagles (12-6, 8-2 CCAA) with 16 kills. Lauren Gomez and Taylor Kushner each had 18 digs and Kelsey Molnar had 44 assists.

The Toros kept pace with the Golden Eagles early on in the first set, but CSULA, which never trailed, went on a 5-1 point run to take a 12-6 lead and set the tone of the game. The Golden Eagles went on to finish the first set 25-18.

CSUDH trailed by as many as two in the second set until the Toros scored six of seven rallies to take a 15-13. The Cardinal and Gold got two points late to take a 24-21 lead but managed to get the game point two plays later.

Autry had five kills during the second game to pace the Toros.

During the match, recent alums in Dana Brown, Alijah Gunsaulus, Hannah Oros, Hillary Domecus, Rose Greco, Azieanna Smith, Antoni Perry, Corissa Santos, Elizabeth Krieger and Tiffany Edlin made their way into the Torodome, a gymnasium in which they spent countless hours giving their all for the volleyball program.

The two teams meet again on Cal State LA's campus on November 4, but in the meantime, the five-match homestand comes to a close on a rare Tuesday night as the Toros host UC San Diego. First serve is at 7 p.m.
